Which country code do you need?
“Country code” can mean several things. Check the field label before copying a value.
Calling prefixes
Used in international telephone numbers. Some countries share a calling code; a listed prefix can also contain an area code.
Currency & internet codes
A currency code identifies money. A country-code top-level domain is an internet domain suffix. Neither is a telephone code.
Country code questions
Are ISO alpha-2 and alpha-3 codes interchangeable?
No. They represent the same place using different formats. Use the two-letter or three-letter value requested by your form or system. IOC and FIFA references may differ from ISO codes.
Why are there 249 entries rather than 249 sovereign states?
The directory covers the ISO-assigned countries and territories in the source snapshot, including dependencies and other areas. It is not a count of sovereign states or an Ostro service-availability list.
Does a country have just one language or time zone?
Not necessarily. Country pages show the language entries supplied by the reference source and the time-zone identifiers listed in IANA’s zone.tab. Language lists are not a complete account of every spoken, official, Indigenous, or signed language.
How current are the details?
The source page lists the exact dataset versions. These are reference snapshots, not live official validation. Confirm requirements with the relevant authority for an operational use, especially telephone routes, currencies, and sporting identifiers.
