Country codes, languages, and time zones belong to different systems. Here is how we put them together.

What is included

The directory contains 249 country and territory records from the ListBase.org August 2026 snapshot. This is the scope of the imported ISO entries, not a claim that there are 249 sovereign states. User-assigned identifiers and additional sporting associations do not create extra ISO country records here.

The import date is . The sources below identify the release used for each field.

How each field is selected

name, native_name
English and native country names come from Annexare, with a small reviewed set of display-name overrides. Alternative source names are retained for search. A native name is one supplied form, not an exhaustive set of official names.
iso_alpha_2, iso_alpha_3, iso_numeric
ListBase ISO references. Numeric values are stored as three-character strings, so 004 remains 004. These are country-level codes, not ISO 3166-2 subdivision codes.
capital, continent, region, sub_region
ListBase references with documented capital corrections where reviewed. A listed capital may be an administrative centre; countries can have multiple centres. Continents and statistical regions are different classifications, so a territory’s continent need not have the same label as its source region. Groupings do not make claims about sovereignty or borders.
dial_code
Source calling prefixes, normalised with a leading + and spaces between country and area codes. Prefixes can be shared, and the snapshot may not include every island or local arrangement. Two trailing source footnote letters are removed from numeric prefixes; they are not dialled.
currency_code, tld
ListBase currency references and country-code top-level domains. Currency names are display labels from the runtime’s internationalisation data. Currency codes and domain suffixes are displayed alongside the country’s other identifiers.
languages
Source language tags are retained. English labels use runtime internationalisation data; native labels come from Annexare when available. Missing native labels are left missing. We do not treat one language as the only “native language” of a country or claim a complete list of official or spoken languages.
timezones
Country-to-zone entries are read from IANA zone.tab, release 2026d. This file supplies identifiers for representative clock-rule locations, including compatibility names. No fixed UTC offset is inferred. Some uninhabited territories have no separate entry.
flag
Locally hosted SVG reference artwork from flag-icons. Flags are displayed alongside their country and territory records.
fifa, ioc, fips
Sporting and legacy references from the source. Malformed sports values are omitted rather than guessed; the Tahiti value is corrected against FIFA’s association page. Sporting codes follow the referenced source. FIPS-style references may occur in older datasets; FIPS 10-4 was withdrawn in 2008.

Corrections and missing values

Reviewed overrides include South Africa’s three capitals, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte for Sri Lanka, common English display names, and the TAH reference for Tahiti. Country pages link to the official sources used for these corrections. Empty or malformed values are shown as not listed or not usable; they are not evidence that a code can never exist.

Some source entries can be historical, simplified, or incomplete. Confirm operational requirements with the responsible authority, especially telephone numbering, sporting identifiers, and time-zone rules. To report a problem, contact Ostro with the country, field, and a public authoritative source.

Download the complete country-code JSON. The file preserves numeric-code leading zeros and keeps multi-value fields as arrays. Retain the source attribution and applicable licences when reusing the data. This endpoint is a static snapshot, not a live country-data API.
