Three building blocks.
An IBAN starts with a country prefix and check digits, followed by the country’s domestic account structure, known as the BBAN.
The example below illustrates the UK format. Other countries use different lengths and arrangements.

How long should an IBAN be?
Use the prefix to find its registered length. Spaces are not counted.

What does this IBAN checker validate?
It checks the prefix, permitted characters, country-specific length and BBAN pattern, and the MOD-97 checksum. Each check is shown separately in the result.
How are the check digits calculated?
The first four characters move to the end, letters convert to numbers and the full value is checked using MOD-97. A correctly formed IBAN has a remainder of 1.
Why does an IBAN fail validation?
A copied value may be incomplete, contain an extra character, use the wrong character type, or fail the checksum. The result highlights which check needs attention so you can review the original entry.
Is an IBAN the same as a SWIFT or BIC code?
No. An IBAN identifies an account using an international format. A SWIFT/BIC identifies an institution. If you also have a BIC, use the SWIFT code checker separately; this tool does not derive a BIC from an IBAN.
Do all countries use IBANs?
No. This tool covers the prefixes in the selected registry release. Some territories use another country’s IBAN prefix. Browse the country-format directory to see the covered prefixes and lengths.
Does the checker save or send my IBAN?
The check runs in your browser. The tool does not send the entry to a validation API, put it in the URL, or save it in browser storage. The copy buttons use your clipboard only when selected. Clear removes the entry and its result.
